Ash Wednesday is the first day in the season of Lent (a season set apart to a posture of openness before the Lord.)

The Ash Wednesday service is designed to help bring us to a recognition of the greatness of God, while at the same time bringing us face to face with our own humanity.  Recognizing our own mortality, and the reality and effect of our sin, we are then brought to a deepening understanding of our need for Jesus.  On Ash Wednesday, as we invite the Lord to search our hearts in the season of Lent, this need is placed on a collision course with the Gospel of Jesus.

What can I expect?

This year we are joining the Ash Wednesday service at St Matthews Anglican Church in Abbostsford.  The service will follow a beautiful liturgy involving:

  • Spoken prayer
  • Sung worship
  • Opportunities to hear and reflect on the word of God
  • The Imposition of Ashes
    • Part way through the service you will be invited to come for the imposition of ashes: ash will be applied to your forehead in the sign of the cross while the words "from dust you came, to dust you will return" Psalm 103 are spoken.
  • Celebration of the Eucharist - also known referred to as the Lord's Table or Communion
  • Prayer of Blessing
    • After being served the Eucharist we would love to pray for you at the start of your Lenten journey.

The following article posted by our friends at The Anglican Compass is a great intro to Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent.
